Rock Creek Park
Explore one of the original national parks right here in Washington, D.C. Established in 1890, Rock Creek Park consists of 2,000 acres of beautiful land with Rock Creek at its core. The creek begins in Montgomery County and flows down to the Potomac. There are trails for hikers, bikers, and joggers! Get away from the bustle of city life and take in the calming nature scenes of this special park.
Kingman & Heritage Islands
The area around Kingman and Heritage Island is another great hiking spot and offers a peaceful atmosphere away from the crowds. There are just under 2.5 miles of trails around the islands visitors can enjoy. Both islands’ trails offer beautiful views of Kingman Lake and a nice respite through the woods. This is the perfect spot for the entire family – the trails are good for all skill levels and aren’t strenuous.
Great Falls
Located north of DC, Great Falls offers breathtaking views of the Potomac’s white water rapids. The trails range in difficulty with the Billy Goat Trail (a local favorite) being among the most difficult. This trail is about 5 miles long and consists of rough, rocky, and steep terrain. So if you’re an avid hiker, this is the trail for you!
Capital Crescent Trail
Visit Montgomery County’s favorite trail – Capital Crescent Trail! Perfect for biking, walking, and jogging, this trail is great for all levels of fitness. With access to Washington, Georgetown and Bethesda, this wide paved path offers up endless opportunities for adventure.
Mt. Vernon Trail
This urban hiking destination is perfect if you’re looking to explore DC’s historic neighborhoods in a new way! The Mt. Vernon Trail spans from George Washington’s Mt. Vernon Estate to Theodore Roosevelt Island. It is also attached to several local trails including the Rock Creek and Woodrow Wilson Bridge trail. There is much to see on this 18-mile paved trail!
